Programme & Topics

Each four-year PhD course has an individual study programme, which depends mainly on the supervisor and the topic of work. However, there are several common points:

  • Each student has to write so-called “minimum”, which is a theoretical essay focused on student’s field of interest (practically a draft introduction part of the thesis) and defend it in front of the examination board.
  • There are usually three examinations from the subjects closely related to the topic of the thesis.
  • The study and examination from one foreign language (usually English) is required. The languages are taught at the Institute of Languages of Slovak Academy of Sciences and the courses are free for PhD students. The offer, apart from English, includes German, Russian, and French language. Foreign students have a mandatory course of Slovak language.
  • As a rule, 1st and 2nd year PhD students assist the lecturers at the exercises and the seminars in the pregradual education.
